Lots of art in the new home of the Miami Open, and it could only be so, having heard the words of President Mike Shapiro: “We’re going to build a complete festival: There will be art, music and restaurants. It will be a true taste of Miami.” the new structure of the Miami Open, given the considerable artistic importance that the city of Miami has been assuming for some years now, has in fact included art in the sports context and does so with Wynwood’s street artist, Jay Bellicchi, who created the geometric work Sacred Street Geometry, with the Modart in Miami, in the Club Level room inside the Hard Rock Stadium and with the Miami Open Art fair that is part of the Art Miami circuit and is located inside the a special (and characteristic!) white tent in which it is possible to find works by modern, post-war, pop and street artists, with a focus on Latin America.
The Modart Gallery exhibits the works of McTiers: images of iconic tennis players who have made the history of tennis, between past and present. The works, on medium size, are all made with an effervescent mixture of expressionist colors specifically used to honor the positivity and liveliness of Miami. The authors, Lucy McTier and her son Jace are known and appreciated artists in the field of Contemporary Sports Art and Portrait. In particular, the sharp eye of Jace McTiers made him a high-level portrait painter with his impeccable interpretation of the sense of movement.
Among the acrylics on display: New Home Hard Rock (title image) Sloane Stephen, Big John, Chris Evert, Novak Djokovic, Champion’s Stare (Serena Williams) Back Hand Ballet (Roger Federer), Left Hand Smash and Atomic Serve.
The Miami Open Art, which makes its debut in the new stadium, includes six galleries from Miami, Palm Beach and Oakland: Arcature Fine Art / Ross Kramer Gallery, Durban Segnini Gallery, Ascaso Gallery, Eternity Gallery, Masterworks Fine Art Gallery and GGA GALLERY.
Entering on the left, the inviting dessert sculptures by Peter Anton, Kaws’ works with Seeing (BFF Lamp), Lost Time Alone Again & Far Far Down, and En Iwamura with Shadow in black sculpture, for Eternity Gallery. Also from Eternity Gallery the works on the left of the entrance with Stallman’s canvas sculptures, high-resolution canvas photos (Giclee) by Michael Moebius, and Mr. Brainwash’s stencils and mix media.
The Durban Segnini Gallery has instead proposed the South American art of the great Fernando Botero (Colombian Woman, 1982) with works by Keith Haring and Damien Hirst.
The unusual work on large format by Manolo Valdes (Two vanilla Ice Cream, 2008) and works by Fernando Botero (Niña en la silla of 2012, the Caballo sculpture of 1981, Man with woman in his arms from 2006 and Seated woman with apple of 2012) have been exhibited by Ascaso Gallery.
Peter Anton also exhibited the 2017 Celebration Donuts for Durban Segnini Gallery. Masterworks Fine Art has opted for blue chip works: Andy Warhol with the collage on Untitled paper of 1982 and the quadrilogy Birth of venus from the details, proposed for $ 395K and Paramount from the Ad series of 1985 sold for $ 210K. In addition to Warhol, Pablo Picasso’s color linomeography, Pique en rouge at jeune of 1959, sold for $ 125,000 and a mixed oil and dried pigment monotype by Sam Francis, Untitled 1991, for sale for $ 58,000. GGA Gallery (Goldman Global Artist) has proposed several street artists, including: Peter Tunney (who has his own gallery inside the Wynwood Wall) with Gratitude of 2019, The London Police with Barrycetamol and the dance of the marmaids, sold for $ 18,000. Also from GGA, the work on the carved door by the Portuguese artist Alexander Farto, aka VHIL, who was already featured at the Miami Wall last December during the Miami Art Week, as well as Logan Hiks (Soho After Sandy and Ravel North, both from 2018, and both sold for $ 25,000 each) and the feathered sculpture of Ron English, Two Ton Sam from 2015, both awarded last year and this year at Art Wynwood with the Tony Wynwood Tony Goldman Lifetime Artistic Achievement Award.
Not only tennis but the combination of art and tennis. Who knows that it may not be the start of a new annual spring artistic meeting for Miami.
